UK Citizens Seek Compensation from Johnson & Johnson After Mesothelioma and Asbestos Disease Diagnoses

Mesothelioma and ovarian cancer patients in the United Kingdom are following the example set by over 40,000 Americans in pursuing legal action against Johnson & Johnson. The victims blame the company’s asbestos-contaminated talcum powder for their illness, and have begun hiring attorneys to represent them in seeking damages from the consumer giant.

Mesothelioma Claims Focus on Decades of Talc Product Use

According to United Kingdom attorneys, there are roughly 3,500 mesothelioma and ovarian cancer victims seeking justice and compensation after having used Johnson & Johnson’s talc-based products for personal hygiene over extended periods.  The individuals each cite their daily application of the powder throughout their adult lives and point to testing that has revealed asbestos contamination in samples of the products. Like their American counterparts, they assert that the company knew or should have known about the presence of asbestos in its products.

British solicitors handling the cases emphasize that their clients developed mesothelioma and ovarian cancer  — both rare and aggressive cancers — after trusting that the product was safe to use.  Victims have been diagnosed with both pleural and peritoneal forms of the disease, as well as malignant tumors in their ovaries.

Mesothelioma Lawsuits Are Expanding Beyond America’s Courts

There are roughly 40,000 mesothelioma lawsuits pending against Johnson & Johnson in the United States, and these legal actions are beginning to spread internationally as victims around the world recognize the link between their illness and contamination of the product. UK courts are set to hear evidence of both product contamination and the level of knowledge that the corporation had of its dangers.

Though the British lawsuits are similar to those being heard in  American courtrooms, UK claimants face different challenges, as the standards for proving causation and rules governing punitive damages are different. Still, British courts can award substantial compensation for pain, suffering, and loss of life quality, as has been the case in the United States.

Johnson & Johnson Insists Its Talc Products Don’t Cause Mesothelioma or Ovarian Cancer

While American juries have awarded billions of dollars in compensation to victims who point to Johnson & Johnson’s products as being the cause of their illnesses, company representatives have consistently rejected these verdicts, claiming that independent testing confirms the absence of asbestos contamination. In the face of its asbestos liabilities, the corporation has worked to establish bankruptcy trusts in the United States while continuing to fight individual cases.
