In the annual release of the U.S. News & World Report’s top centers and hospitals for cancer treatment, several mesothelioma centers once again ranked in the top of the “Best of Hospitals” list and “Honor Rolls of America’s Best Hospitals.”
In order to rank the best cancer treatment centers and hospitals, U.S. News & World Report looks particularly for places that offer experience and knowledge in treating difficult and rare cases of cancer, as well as places that have at least 294 patients who are high-risk and need specialized treatment.
Mesothelioma is considered a rare and difficult type of cancer to treat. It’s also extremely aggressive, making many of the traditional cancer treatments ineffective. Physicians and experts who specialize in the life-threatening disease are well-aware of the difficulties involved in treating patients with mesothelioma, and generally go the “extra mile” to ensure they can devise individualized treatment plans for each patient.
The top mesothelioma treatment centers and hospitals in the latest “Best of the Hospitals” list include:
Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center
Ranked #1 on the U.S. News and World Report’s prestigious list, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MKCC) has the nation’s largest amount of mesothelioma patients, and works closely with scientists to ensure the best treatment options.
As the largest and oldest cancer treatment center in the world, MKCC has a team of experts on-board, including oncologists, radiologists, nurses, pathologists, and much more.
MKCC was the only hospital to receive a perfect 100% score.
University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center
The MD Anderson Cancer Center ranks #2 on the list, due to its specialty-trained physicians who treat a myriad of mesothelioma patients each year while using “pioneering advances.”
According to MD Anderson’s Thoracic Center, “it cares for more patients with mesothelioma than almost any other center in the United States.”
MD Anderson received a score of 99.9%. This the the 25th year in a row that the center ranked on U.S News & World Report’s list.
Brigham and Women’s Hospital
Ranked #9 on the U.S News and World Report’s “Honor Roll of America’s Best Hospitals,” Brigham and Women’s Hospital is the home of the International Mesothelioma Program, in which state-of-art technology and treatment helps close to 300 mesothelioma patients each year.
In addition, the president of Brigham and Women’s Health Care, Betsy Nabel, MD, states that it’s honor for the hospital to rank on the best hospital list for the 22nd year in a row.
“Our presence on the Honor Roll of Best Hospitals year after year is a testament to the dedication of our community at BWH,” said Dr. Nabel.
